Residents asked to use caution during commute

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (February 4, 2010) –
Mount Pleasant fire, police, and public services senior staff met with town administrator Mac Burdette to prepare for the upcoming rain event expected to begin early tomorrow morning and conclude late afternoon.

“Our employees are ready to respond, but we are very concerned about how saturated the ground is and about the elevated levels of ditches and ponds,” said Burdette. “Residents are urged to use caution in flood-sensitive areas of the town. While we are hoping for a moderate rain event, we are prepared to respond to a severe storm that could produce 3 to 5 inches of rain. Residents should monitor flooding/weather conditions on the radio and television. Do not attempt to travel through flooded intersections or roads in a vehicle unless you are certain of the depth of the water and the location of road shoulders.”

Public Services Director Jody Peele highlighted several flood-prone areas. They include, but are not limited to:

• Coleman Boulevard (by Moultrie Middle School)
• Long Point Road (between Boone Hall Plantation and Whipple Road)
• Areas of Snee Farm
• Pitt & Ferry streets
• Mathis Ferry Road and Rifle Range roads may be an issue because of recent rain events.
• Town-wide retention ponds that may be at or near capacity due to recent rain events

“We encourage residents to keep the grates and ditches clear by removing leaves and debris from the street inlets and ditches near their homes. But we ask that they not put themselves in peril to clear these grates during the storm,” added Peele.
