MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (July 1, 2009) - The Town of Mount Pleasant Senior Services Center Thomasena Stokes-Marshall Building will offer two additional sessions of its driver safety program in July and August. This adult and senior program, which may provide a discount on car insurance for adults over the age of 50 who complete the course, is open to the public for registration.

The center is reoffering the course after sessions offered earlier this year filled up quickly and have been quite popular. The AARP Driver Safety Course is a two-day program, offered on Monday and Wednesday, July 20 and 22, as well as on August 10 and 12. The sessions run from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day at the senior center.

The course is designed to help drivers age 50+ become aware of and counteract changes that occur due to aging by adjusting driving habits. Upon completing the two-part program, participants may qualify for an automobile insurance discount from their insurance company. The course requires no driving. Gary Jaster, recreation specialist at the senior center, is the program instructor.

“This fun and interactive course provides an excellent way to evaluate your current driving abilities, learn compensation techniques and how some of the rules of the road have changed, as well as increase your safety,” said Jaster.

The AARP Driver Safety Class is open to anyone age 50+. Fees to participate in the program are $14 per person. Members of AARP receive a discounted rate of $12. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older, and has been offered through the AARP for more than 25 years.

Interested participants may register in person for the class at the Town of Mount Pleasant Senior Services Center’s Thomasena Stokes-Marshall Building or by calling 843-856-2166. The Town of Mount Pleasant Senior Services Center is located at 840 Von Kolnitz Road, near the intersection of Von Kolnitz and Mathis Ferry Roads in Mount Pleasant.
